PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

SBSOS is a year-round sports and education program serving committed Santa Barbara youth (5th-12th grade) who qualify for the National School Lunch Program.  SBSOS pillars include squash, academic tutoring, community service, enrichment opportunities, and mentoring. We operate after school, on weekends, and during holidays.  By using squash as a motivator, we guide students to realize their academic, athletic, and personal potential.  Our goal is for each student to graduate from high school prepared for their next step: college or to launch a career.  We stay in contact with graduates as they work toward their post-high school goals, and offer guidance and support through age 25.  We are closely involved with each student on many levels, and describe the program as “an inch wide but a mile deep”.

SBSOS serves any student that passes our program tryouts process regardless of age, race, color, religion, creed, citizenship status, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity, national origin, or any other protected status under applicable law.

ACADEMICS PROGRAMMING

SBSOS is committed to the academic success of each of our students.  Our goal is that every SBSOS completes high school, enrolls in and graduates from college or vocational school, or has a good plan for his/her future.  We achieve this goal through intensive academic support and enrichment from 5th grade to high school graduation - and beyond.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

At SBSOS we believe that it is our responsibility to give back to the community. All students in the program participate in a minimum of at least 15 hours of service each year - many of our students complete more than 60 hours each year.  Community service provides the opportunity for our students to learn about the many nonprofits in Santa Barbara, and to see that we can make the world a better place by helping others.

SQUASH PROGRAMMING

Team members participate in physical activities three to four days a week throughout the school year and throughout the summer.  The squash program consists of on-court instruction from a squash professional and off court training.  Students have the opportunity to travel to tournaments as well.  Nutrition and healthy living are also important pieces of the program.

REQUIREMENTS

Students are required to to participate in a minimum of 100 hours of academic curriculum, 100 hours of squash activity, and at least 15 hours of community service every year.  Students spend a lot of time with us and we are able to help to provide activities that are engaging and enriching - and FUN!
